On March 26th, I have disclosed Saenuri party’s assemblyman Myung-Chul Cho’s counterfeit of degree and work experience on Channel A’s ‘Quedo nanma’ program. The day before the reveal on March 25th, I met with Myung-Chul Cho at a restaurant. I asked Cho, a proportional representation delegate of Saenuri Party at that time to step back and silently asked him take responsibility of what he did. I hoped that Cho who received the public’s interest for representing the North Korean defects would be fairly evaluated. However, the answer I got from him was quite disappointing.
I asked him why he lied that he got a doctor’s degree when he actually did not and he answered ‘I received semi-doctor’s degree (equal to master’s degree in North Korea)’ acknowleging the fact that he did not receive a doctor’s degree. The next question was ‘Then why did you say that you got a doctor’s degree? Isn’t that counterfeiting of degree?‘ He justified his actions saying that ’I did nothing wrong. The National Intelligence Servie (NIS) clarified that fact.’ To get a definite answer, I asked ‘Didn’t you write that you got semi-doctor’s degree’ and Cho consistently replied ‘I wrote semi-doctor but Saenuri party and national election commission changed it to doctor’s degree’questioned what he would do if this fact is disclosed and causes negative impact on Saenuri Party on general election and he said ‘There is nothing I can do. I will just go with it’, avoiding his moral responsibility.
I can clearly confirm that Cho counterfeited his degree and work experience. However, before I do that, I wish that he could acknowledge that he had made a mistake. That is certainly what he should do for the public and the North Korean defects who have trusted in him. Cho said that he received doctor’s degree from Kim Il-Sung University however, only 3 people, Youngjae Oh, Hoon Kim, and Gul Kim received semi-doctor’s degree in 1980 from college of science where only the national elites attended. Kim Il-Sung who was satisfied with the report inspected the science building and ordered ‘nurture a lot of doctors and semi-doctors from people who are in their 20s and 30s.’ Su-in Lee from the college of science received semi-doctor’s degree in 1989 at the age of 26 and was the first one to receive doctor’s degree at the age of 32.
This is a fact that all elites who attended university in North Korea and worked in science and technology field know. If Cho had graduated from college at the age of 24 and received doctor’s degree at the age of 28, the whole North Korea would have gone uproarious but either the three college of science graduates of the 1980s or I have never heard of ‘Doctor Myungchul Cho.’ Cho not only counterfeited his degree but also his work experience. When he first immigrated to South Korea, he said that he worked at the Kim Il-Sung university but all of a sudden, his degree suddenly skyrocketed and his job position also changed to having been a professor.
A North Korean defect who always lies will have a negative impact on fellow North Korean defects if he becomes a national assemblyman. This will not only deceive the public but also plant a negative impression of North Korean defects which will make the future of them very hopeless. A national assemblyman who has a North Korean defect background will carry out an important role in the future of two Korea’s integration and unification. Thus, Cho’s morality should be verified. Myungchul Cho should definitely take responsibility to show the public his morality and trustworthiness.
