According to this paper’s research in June, 2012, it has been confirmed that North Korean defectors in China are estimated to be 46,000 people.
According to an unofficial data of the Public Security Bureau which is one of the three provinces in Northeast China, there are about 50,000 North Korean defectors standing between life and death in a third country with China as the center as of early June. A report that there are 46,000 only in China among these people has been conveyed to the central Public Security Bureau.
Among the 46,000 North Korean defectors identified to be in China in early May, there were 16,000~17,000 men(under 37%), 7000~8000 children among them(under 17.4%), the rest were women and in many cases, more than 50% are identified to be women. However, even among the 7000~8000 children, over 80% are women and about 30,000 people, which is over 75% of the North Korean defectors that are staying in China, are women in reality. Most of the children that these 30,000 women gave birth to by illegally marrying Chinese locals, have not been counted in this statistics.
Since this is the data which is the sum of materials that agents in charge of North Korean defectors at the Public Security Bureau of each city and prefecture uploaded by associating with the Public Security Bureau-affiliated police stations of the three provinces of the Northeast and other provinces such as Shandong where it is judged that North Korean defectors are living at, it is quite trustworthy.
The important fact is that an average of 3000 to 4000 people(less than 10%) are sent back to North Korea every year by the North Korean defector center that China’s Public Security Bureau directly manages in the order of Domun, Dandong, Jian.
Moreover, according to a source in North Korea in early April, the number of population that did not die in North Korea and is registered as unclarified(inside North Korea, all of these people are assumed to have defected from the North) from September, 2010 to the present is estimated to be about 30,000. Among these people, men are about 17% which is about 5000 people. In other words, the rest are women and it is speculated that most of them were sold to China by human trafficking.
If we look from this side, a calculation that among the North Korean defectors in China, natives of North Korea that settled in China are about 20,000 in average. In addition, it is identified that many of these people are sending money to North Korea.
This paper is giving an implication that the government should prepare to accept at least 50,000 people since the possibility to enter the Republic of Korea is open to most of these people.
